Emergency departments (EDs) frequently have inadequate capacity to evaluate and treat individuals with mental health conditions, thereby over-burdening staff, raising costs, and leading to poor outcomes and experience of care. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), in partnership with Well Being Trust, ran an 18-month Learning Community in which multi-disciplinary teams from eight hospitals tested a change package and associated measures focused on the care experience for individuals with mental health or substance use disorders. This online course with coaching contains the learnings from these eight pilot hospitals, from improving health outcomes and patient and staff experience to strategies for reducing avoidable ED re-visits. Through 5 interactive sessions, with additional all learner calls and 1:1 coaching, participants will gain practical guidance, tools, and resources to begin this transformative work within their own organizations.
Recognize the importance of building a trauma-informed culture in the ED through this 5-session online course with coaching.
