Climate and Health

The imperative for health care organizations to tackle climate change is clear: The health care sector both contributes to climate change — accounting for 4.4 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions — and also must contend with its effects on human health.

IHI partners with health care organizations across the world who share the understanding that we cannot achieve the goals of health care quality, safety, value, and equity without taking action on climate. Progress requires both mitigation efforts — such as lowering carbon emissions from hospital operations and care delivery — and adaptation — preparing for the impacts of climate events and extreme weather on the communities they serve.

Organizations leading in climate and health are making public commitments to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, bringing quality, safety, and equity climate goals in alignment, and applying improvement science to pursue decarbonization and climate resilience.
